A Conversation with Senator Ayeka Kel

November 7, 2012

GNN Reporters Daana Kira and Rakiko Lowtide traveled to the Republic world of Onderon where they spoke with Senator Ayeka Kel.

Leaving the GNN offices on Onderon we were met by a young girl named Aria Kel who invited us to speak with her mother, Senator Ayeka Kel, at their house. Taking the girl up on her offer we had a pleasant conversation with the Senator and were able to get some updates on the happenings in Onderon, as well as the Senator’s major proposal to the Republic.

Senator Ayeka Kel

Currently on Onderon people are concerned for the well-being of the Queen who was injured following the escape of Death Watch leader Vurr Viszla. Viszla had been taken into custody on Onderon for several charges including an assault. The government seems to have been working with the local Mandalorians to bring the Death Watch leader to justice but he was able to escape from his prison. Following his escape he tracked the Queen down and attacked her for as a yet unknown reason at which point he also assaulted several Jedi before escaping once again.

Following these events, Mr. Viszla continued his rampage kidnapping and beating Senator Shan Connell who is still recovering from the ordeal. As for his motives, they are still unclear, but he is now wanted on several world and by several Mandalorian clans.

About the Republic, the Senator stated things were still grim. Several worlds have withdrawn their support and the economy is struggling. However she hopes to work with other member worlds on two projects, an economic stimulus plan and the formation of the Galactic Alliance.

The Senator believes that the economy of the Republic is tied to the health of member worlds. As for Onderon she said that strong support by large companies such as her Paragon Enterprises in the investment of the system has started to turn around things and this type of model could be used on other worlds, where local companies would strengthen the system and in turn the whole of the Republic. Basically a build of economic stability from the ground that would then project upwards on a galactic scale.

As for her second proposal, which she is putting together to introduce to the Senate once it complies with Republic law is to create a Galactic Alliance whereby worlds or factions that normally couldn’t join the Republic would be able to form a cohesive structure to take on many of the challenges of the Galaxy. Several of the Republic ideas such as freedom and liberty would still be promoted but in a much more flexible organization where individual treaties with each alliance member would form the backbone of the relationship. This in turn would strengthen the Republic’s economy, re-form relationships with systems that have left the Senate and allow the Republic or its member worlds to work with factions or systems they normally could not. The Alliance would be an economic and ideals co-operation so the galaxy could act in one voice, while the Republic would continue to exist as the core government for its member worlds, promoting peace and the rule of law.

Many Senators have given their concern that this Alliance could overshadow the Republic, but Senator Kel believes something could be hammered out to benefit everyone in the galaxy without diminishing any institution.”

Senator, if you believe on this alliance, go to meet the possibly interested leaders and listen their view on such a multilateral treaty. I fear without their input, the Republic Senate will discuss in the void.

Senator Kel, I agree with your proposal and would like to aid you in your efforts. Maybe it would be wise if Senator Kel, Senator Tafo, and myself visited the different worlds together. However, I can’t say that I’m comfortable with the Republic’s concerns.

The Republic is a strong force and they’ve worked terribly hard, but I question their current direction and values. I wonder if a democratic form of government is what galactic citizens want, but we won’t know until we start communicating with others.

I have some visits to make here and there for various purpose. Although to tag along with someone we shall first get on together to prevent a disharmonious speech. As for the Republic’s value… I fear there is none. The Republic only defines organisation rules without telling their purpose. So far it is up to the individual members to promote ideals of justice, equality, unity, freedom or right to happiness. But they can also practice a firm control of the society, nepotism, obscurantism. This shall not be allowed, but this is allowed, and sadly my efforts to support a progressive vision of the Republic came up against Conservatism.

The Republic shall not unit “galactic citizens,” but those of the Republic. You shall not ask them to serve an ideal which is not theirs.

That’s troubling indeed. We seem to agree on something at last, Senator Tafo. Perhaps we can meet either on Velmor or Tython to discuss these things in detail.

Perhaps so… However, I’d invite all members of the Senate to co-operate with me on this. It is a group effort, not just a few of us. The Republic is stronger than people give it credit for, but it could be stronger and more efficient. I am also concerned for those who left and their state of affairs. I only wish to help the Free Galaxy for the better… and continuing on our current path isn’t going to get us anywhere fast. That is the purpose of this Alliance… it is also a safety net should the Republic fall again upon harder times. The alliance can be adopted as a successor government in the event the Republic cannot stay together in its present form, but at the current time, I’d like to preserve it, help reform it, and grow it if possible. I urge all current members of the Senate and interested Independent nations to help us in any way they can for the greater good and a brighter future.
